My family enjoys the beauty of God’s nature, and the
The gardens seem to have been there for hundreds of years, the plants meshing with the gentle rolling terrain. Exotic Imperial Carp (Koi) unafraid of humans, beg for food pellets dispensed to visitors for a quarter. Squirrels, turtles, lizards, ducks, and geckos run freely. Trees sway in the gentle breeze and water skips across the rocks of waterfalls.
We visited the site for years before learning that the land was once a gullied bluff originally used as a watering hole for cattle, a trash dump, a squatter’s camp, and then as a gravel pit to build the streets of old Fort Worth. Never would we have guessed that something so beautiful could have come from such an ugly beginning.
One of the many things I love about God is that He sees our potential—even when we are living in the pit. He takes us, cleans off the gravel and trash, and plants His Son, His Spirit, and His new life within us.
Thank You, Father for seeing beyond our mess and giving us a new and living Hope.
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:19 NIV).
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Cor 5: 17 NIV).

Bushwhacking Joy Extinguishers and
Marshmallow Wars
Last week, The Christian Pulse published an article I wrote about Bushwhackers (The Lord is my helper). I have times when I struggle with life’s difficulties – not just ours, but the never-ending prayer requests from friends and family members. Satan is a bushwhacker. He attacks with a bevy of worries and concerns that gallop into my life in a cloud of choking and blinding dust that threaten to overwhelm and extinguish any joy.
Deep in a begging prayer for help, I stood in the kitchen cleaning up after dinner. A big, white marshmallow zipped past my shoulder followed by the deep laugh of our sixteen-year-old son. I scooped up the fluffy morsel and threw back, then dodged and weaved through the kitchen to avoid enemy fire. My husband, son, and I raced through the house pelting (or attempting to pelt) one another with marshmallows. Finally we collapsed in the family room, our stomach’s sore from laughing and exhausted from playing.
How like God to answer prayers with something fun and imaginative. God always hears our cries, and He knows when we are in desperate need of His presence. Our joy flame may dim during difficulties but can never be extinguished because the source of fuel comes from The Light of the World, our Savior Jesus Christ.
Each and every day, spend time in His presence and in His word. And if you need some giggles, grab a bag of big marshmallows and fuel up that flame of joy with your friends and family. “But let all who take refuge in You be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread Your protection over them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You” (Ps 5:11 NIV).
